Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness
Lately, the news has been full of reports about pandemic flu and predictions of a bad hurricane season. I was talking to a friend about bird flu and a man overheard and began making fun of us. Ray and I
believe that if our neighbors are not prepared, we are not prepared. I've received many emails from readers who are discouraged because others laugh at their efforts to spread the word about emergency
preparedness.
I understand the feeling very well. I recently purchased a large quantity of cans of beans and packages of dry beans and lentils. The person ahead of me in the checkout line commented on my cart load. I
responded by saying ."I am stocking up in case we have a hurricane or other emergency." She giggled. I went on for a couple more sentences and gave up.
My next stop was another store where I had several boxes of canning jars in my cart. An older woman commented on my jars. I again said, "I am preparing for Bird Flu." She then told me she had watched the
Oprah segment and was concerned. We had a lively conversation for several minutes.
Spreading the word about emergency preparedness is probably the most important thing I've ever done. Please join Ray and me in our endeavor! (Note: you may find some old references to Y2K. We are
updating the site. Just replace "Y2K" with "Emergency" when you read. The message is the same.)
